Edison Mugalu

Edison Mugalu "Recent Styles"

8 March - 22 March, 2011

Edison Mugalu is an artist of immense ability. As a painter, he has mastered the wet media and can use acrylic paint so organically thus making it as atmospheric as oil. He is a man after Monet's hat. He works with quick but well controlled blobs of paint to render mainly people in flowing garments working on vast beaches collecting shells or wondering about in long Arabesque corridors. His brilliant palette and impasto canvases have influences many a Kampala artist. This body of works can only be equated to a gulp from a pitcher of aging wine!

ARTIST: HENRY MZILI MUJUNGA

"Buffalow Women"

Opening reception: November 5th,2010, 6pm
Duration: 3 weeks

About the artist:

Henry Mzili Mujunga is an enigma. He is arguably one of the most influential artists of our times, and yet the least assertive. As a painter he shows a deep understanding of the expressive use of media and explores gender themes inventively, drawing much admiration from his contemporaries. He is a teacher who shows us how easy it is to put any media on canvas but also how difficult it is to say so much with childlike simplicity.

About the concept: Buffalo woman

My mother, my daughter and my lover are all women! Yet they perceive me as the adversary. It must take a great deal of stubbornness to take a stance against a world of men so biased against women. For a modern woman to take care of herself by dressing well, feeding well and walking with a dignified gait, it must take the stoicism of a Buffalo. Taking a buffalo stance has often been misinterpreted by men as aggressive and antagonistic but the world must now learn that it is an affirmative and corrective measure; the only way to ensure a good life for all humanity. It is acceptable for a modern woman to wear make up and revealing clothes, and talk back to men who try to put her down. Buffalo woman is my search for acceptance from the daughters of Venus.

"New works"
Artist: Ipoot Joshua

October 2010

Now there aren’t that many renowned painters from Karamoja despite the fact that the karimojong are a very colourful lot.
Nonetheless, Ipoot has beaten the odds to become one of Uganda’s leading surrealists. His work evokes the poetry of Okot P B’tek (1931-82), weaving lavish tales of sleepy-eyed belles embedded in flowery gardens and dreamy bulls, he has captured the spirit of cattle loving people.
The hidden eroticism is typical of a Makerere trained artist; one whose work would be incomplete without adoration of the female curves!
